If this is your case you will have to tate into accoun the following rule: By default Windows XP assigns Drive Letters to physical units (actually physically connected to your PC) like your pendrive therefore in the above exampleWindows tries to assign the letter E to your pendrive but it has already been assigned t a network drive.

Is your PC connected to a network? if so, do you have any virtual drive letters assigned? for example, the letter C represents your hard drive the letter D your CD ROM the letter E a hard drive or folder in another computer. Deleting all reference to the 1 bad device has alwasy cleared up the problem.Īfter you delete everything and reboot, plug in the Flash Drive and XP will run the “Found New Hardware Wizard” and install your Drive. In your case I do believe it is just a simple bad reg entry. This problem was the #1 Tech Call for the first 2 years, as 95% of windows users, because they had used 95/98/ME Just Plugged In the USB Hardware WITHOUT Reading the Instructions. When the Software is installed a new reg entry is made but XP reads the First reg entry. When you have limited USB ports, say 2, When you plug in the 3rd USB hardware the first is normally is left alone But can be corrupt.Īnytime you plug in a USB hardware device Before the Software XP Does Add the Info to the Registry But with NO path th the reg. WinXP at times does add to much and sometimes wrong info to the Registry.ġ: Always Install Software Before Plunging in ANY USB Hardware. Do you Yahoo!? Next-gen email? Have it all with the all-new Yahoo! Mail Beta. I have also used the USB port for my digital camera and an MP3 player, probably since the last time I used the flash drive at home.Ĭould it be that the computer is expecting it to be a camera or MP3? What do I need to do to retrieve the data on that drive (other that take it back to the work computer and e-mail it to myself) ? The light flashes, but I don’t see it in device lists or anything. Now on my home computer, I can’t seem to get it to recognize the drive.

There are more reasons of course but the above seems the most likely. Another cause = if you are using a motherboard powered usb hub ( used to increase the number of usb ports) it could be a power issue (not getting enough power to drive the device) but i doubt this is the case. Network Operating System - I think it is due to the drive letter that the OS is trying to assign already being in use by a NETWORK drive. I have seen this happen alot of times when Novell Netware was being used for a N.O.S. The thumb drive should now KEEP the same drive letter on reboot etc. Assign a new drive letter (such as z:) but ensure that the drive letter is not in use 9. Right click on the volume and choose “Change drive letter or path” 8. Find the volume that has the disk space that is the size of your usb (determine which volume is your usb) 7.
